Growing coffee, and the forest around it.

The Huila highlands are among the most biodiverse places on Earth. Here is what we do to protect them, and how we measure it.

Shade-grown farms

We fund native tree planting so coffee grows under a forest canopy, the way it evolved to.

Farms with full shade cover82%

Clean water

Every partner farm treats its processing water before it returns to the rivers communities depend on.

Farms with bio-filtration100%

Organic transition

We cover part of the cost and lost yield while farms move to organic certification.

A living income

Our price is tied to quality, not the commodity market. Women-led farms receive an extra 15%.

Coffee growing under a forest canopy

The forest is the farm.

Coffee grown under native canopy ripens more slowly, building more sugar and brighter acidity. The shade isn't only good for the land; it makes better coffee.

We help each farm choose trees suited to its microclimate. Guamo, nogal and yarumo are common in our network, and they also give the family timber, fruit and habitat for wildlife.

Water flowing through the hills of Huila

Every liter returns clean.

Washing coffee can use up to 40 liters of water per kilogram. Where farms share rivers with their neighbors, that is a real responsibility.

Between 2021 and 2023 we financed ceramic bio-filtration tanks on all 34 farms, so processing water is cleaned before it goes back to the land.

Finca El Mirador

San Agustín, 1,750 m

Since joining our network in 2019, she converted the farm to fully organic practices and planted 180 shade trees. Her Pink Bourbon scored 87, the highest in our portfolio that season.

Finca La Esperanza

Pitalito, 1,620 m

Héctor Muñoz and his two sons farm 4 hectares in Pitalito. They pioneered the honey process in our network, and their lot is now one of our best sellers. They installed a bio-filter in 2021 with our support.
